We use Buckwheat plantings as a short-season spring & summer cover crop. Buckwheat improves the soil texture, suppresses weeds and attracts beneficial insects and pollinators with its abundant blossoms. We interplant Buckwheat and sunflowers with very good results.  We have also found that Buckwheat makes a great greenery filler to compliment our cut flowers.  While Buckwheat may wilt slightly when cut during the heat of the day it will rebound well when hydrated and lasts long in flower bouquets!  When you come to visit Knobstone Flower Farm ask about our complementary Buckwheat stems to add volume to your  cut flower bouquet. We enjoy sharing and spreading the word about the benefits of this amazing grain crop.
We use crop rotations and cover crops to support microorganisms, disease reduction and overall soil health.  We believe in integrated pest management where beneficial insects co-exist with our flower crops.  We encourage you to come visit and hear the "hum" off bees and other beneficial insects that pollinate our flowers and provide pest control.  We enjoy sharing our flowers and the sustainable farming practices that allow for a truly unique flower experience!
Knobstone Flower Farm is committed to sustainable agriculture practices that provides the freshest possible flowers using organic methods!  We even hand harvest a significant amount of seed from our flowers and sunflowers for the next year's planting.   Our understanding and commitment to the ecosystem allows us to provide beautiful, long lasting flowers without compromising the ability for current or future generations to meet their needs.
We cover our tilled fields with cover crops such as winter rye and hairy vetch.  These winter hardy cover crops fix nitrogen in the soil, suppress weeds, control erosion and act as a green manure for our next season of sunflowers and wildflowers.
It all starts with good dirt!  Full sunlight, adequate rain and about 60 days of patience!

Winter is the perfect time for separating the marigold seeds that we hand harvested last fall. These orange marigolds will be planted along the borders of our wildflower field. The first two pictures show the mailbox planting where we harvested thousand of seeds from a half dozen marigold plants. Separating these seeds really makes us want to welcome spring as soon as possible!
